Friendship

Sometimes I wonder if I have enough friends. I don't have many. And I wonder, sometimes, if I should have more.

But then I think that I would have to keep up with all of them, to know all of them, to make time for all of them, to be there for all of them.

Because isn't that what friendship is supposed to be about?

I don't need a full set of fingers to count the people who are real, true, absolute friends.

I have lots of "situational friends." People I work with. People I see frequently at my favorite cafes. People I see at races. People like that, that I only see at specific times, in specific situations.

But I don't think of them as real friends. They are people who know of me, but don't necessarily know me.

My friends know me. Really and truly know me.

They are the people I can call on any time of the day or night, for any reason, and they will be there. No questions asked.

They are the people who accept the quirks of me, without asking me to change them. Or even wanting me to change them.

They are the people who will let me cry or yell or laugh or anything, for any reason. Or no reason at all.

They are my friends. In the most real, true, absolute sense possible.

And I don't need more than that.

I don't think we need a whole bunch of them. I have a few really good friends, who I spend a lot of time with and can talk to about important things with. We really get each other, care about each other and enjoy each other's company. I was talking with my Best Friend about this awhile ago, and we came to the realization that especially once you get married, acquaintances become less important. It's fun to hang out, but you just don't have the time to develop huge clans of friends. And so what little time you do have, you want to spend on the people who matter most. So you don't really care when everyone else just falls by the wayside.

True words. Some friends are only here for brief moments in our lives and others for seasons, it's the ones that stay and leave their footprints on our hearts that are the ones that really impact our lives.

I've been thinking about this a lot recently, especially when I realized how alone I feel in that there are really just a few people I could call if I needed someone to watch my kids in an emergency (my main person just moved to Texas...) and it got me sad for a while. But I like knowing I'm not spread too thin friendship wise, that I can give what I have to those who matter, does that make sense?

I have probably 3, maybe 4, who fit that role for me, and one of them is my husband, and while I adore him, I don't necessarily count him in the FRIEND category. 2 of them I've known since elementary school, and have become my sisters. At times, I wish I had someone that close to me who lived closer, but then I realize how blessed I am to have them in my life at all, and I stop "shouldding" all over.

I think there are only about two of those people in my life. and one is my husband, so he really doesn't count because sometimes you really need a girlfriend who understands when you need to complain about those husband things.

Yes, yes, and yes. True friendships are a rare and beautiful thing.

it's not the quantity, it's the quality. it's hard to have a quality relationship with 57 of your closest. it's way more important to have a handful that you truly know and that truly know you. the rest, as you say, are situational. that doesn't mean they are not your friends, they are just...different than the true ones.

it's also awesome to have that one person who you know you can count on no matter what. the one that truly knows you. thanks for being my person! :)

We don't need a lot of friends do we? There's only so many you can truly keep up with, listen to or share the debts of your heart with. So I agree with you here. I just found your blog and love it! Thanks for speaking the words of my heart.
